So doctor who legacy, an puzzle game from your mobile devices that is “free”. And yea i did just put free in quotation marks, more on that later. So i was not with the first people to get this game, Belgium obvious wasn’t going to be the first country it was made available to, but never the less i got it pretty quickly. Though the annoyance there was that France, Germany and the Netherlands ALL got it a day earlier. I mean come on, i understand releasing it sooner in the UK as continental Europe but couldn’t they have just released it through out western Europe at the same time. Maybe that made to much sense for them.
It loads in an ok time but here is already one of my first issues with it. You need to be connected to your wireless internet to play it in the first place. I don’t understand why, it’s a silly puzzle game in the style of candy crush and you don’t even get in game adverts. It seems pretty rubbish to me that as long as you aren’t unlocking promo-codes or buying stuff that you shouldn’t be connected to the internet. I suppose that to makes far to much logical sense for it to be implemented.
Then the game itself. The interface is nice enough, the side tab containing “play episode” “team” “tardis” “store” “fan area” and finally “options”.
Firstly the categories team and TARDIS. In the TARDIS part you get to see which doctors you’ve unlocked and which companions you’ve unlocked. You can upgrade them there, and change their outfits. In the TARDIS bit you get to pick 5 different teams, under 5 tabs that you can play the game with. This can be fun once you’ve unlocked loads and loads of companions and several doctors, because a change in order of the same team you have as your first team is still quite boring. It generally works pretty well though i personally would have preferred it if the two things were just one piece of the interface. It frequently happens that you are mistaken and that you go “ooh i need to upgrade a member of my party” so you click on team whilst you should be in TARDIS.
Then we get to the Store which consists of a season 7 character Roll, a season 6 character roll, specials and time crystals. All of those work but the time crystals, when i tried to buy some the game crashed and it has been glitching ever since. On top of that you need to buy at least 5 time crystals in one go before you can unlock the “fan area” the makers of this game were even so rude as to literally say that you were not a REAL fan of the show or the game (they did not specify) if you did not unlock it. Well then i guess i am not a real fan, but i am most certainly an insulted person. I am sorry that because i can not buy some stuff right now i am not a real fan, actually i am not sorry, and in fact i’d even go so far as to say that the person who made that facebook post in the name of the game ought to apologize.
Seeing as i am not a real fan because i don’t buy time crystals, well i wanted to but then they were rude also the app glitched, i can not discuss the fan area. So i am sorry for that bit of emptiness in my review. I will say this though, the drop rate of “time crystals” is ridiculously low in this game. And that gives me even more reasons to have a bit of a bad feeling when it comes to this game.
Finally we get to play some under the play episode category. Season six is locked until you finish season seven (in another piece of backwards logic, but i suppose they will work their way backwards though the history of Doctor Who, which of course makes me wonder, what the fuck will they do once Season 8 is here?). The graphics are nice enough, and the game play is pretty easy to understand. You work your way through the levels sometimes unlocking characters.
As i said earlier the drop rate for time crystals is ridiculously low, other time fragments you get every now and then (though the makers claim they doubled the drop rate i personally do not feel as if i am finding more stuff then before). Finally i do want to talk about the drop rate of characters. Which is described as “rare drop”. I personally hate this description with all due respect from that description i really do not know shit. Can you please just put a percentage on that “5% chance drop” something like that. Because ‘very rare’ means nothing and it will only get me frustrated sooner when i replay some level for the 500th time because the character i want to unlock still hasn’t dropped. Though then again i do suspect that that is what they want, they want you to get so fed up you just buy the character. Because as we all know, buying shit is the only way you show you are a REAL fan.
Another annoying thing is that you can not unlock the next rank for several characters until you are at season 6. Now this would not be an issue if there somewhere was like a “season seven 20 of 25 levels unlocked” thing you could check to see how long it would actually take you to get to season six. But no that to is something you can only guess at.
In the end i would have deleted this game a while ago if it wasn’t for the fact that it is a Doctor Who game. And it’s, as far as i know, the only one you can play for free on your mobile device. That doesn’t however make it a good game. Not in the slightest, if i have any recommendations for the creators then it would be this:
- Give players some extra info (how high is the % of drop rates, how many levels has each season, etc)
- Apologize for calling people who do not buy “time crystals” not real fans
- Work on glitches such as the keyboard, buying stuff, etc
all in all i would give the game two stars if it was a regular game, it gets an extra star for being a doctor who game. As i said, it helps, but it certainly does not take away all the issues i have with it.
